Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone: Why It Frightens Us and How to Start Small

I have been meaning to start this blog for a very long time. As a therapist, I love reading other blogs, particularly in the world of mental health, mindfulness, and personal growth. For me, blogs are a space to inspire, educate, and remind us to pause and reflect. They can be entertaining, poignant, and deeply relatable.

So, why have I been putting this off for months?

I realised it comes down to the fear of vulnerability. Putting yourself out there feels deeply personal. It triggers that familiar wave of anxiety and a cascade of intrusive thoughts: Who would want to read about my thoughts? Why do I think I’m the expert? What if I get judged?

Then, I had a moment of self-realisation. Every single day, I ask my clients to be vulnerable and open with me. I encourage them to step out of their comfort zone. I gently offer new perspectives to help them consider another path, a different choice. I regularly explain the benefits of leaving your comfort zone—how pushing our boundaries in the gentlest way enables us to grow, develop, and understand ourselves better.

Yet, here I was, resisting doing the exact same thing. I was trapped in my own comfort zone, paralysed by the fear of pressing ‘publish’.

Why Is Leaving Your Comfort Zone So Hard?

To understand how to step out of your comfort zone, we first have to understand why we stay there. From a psychological perspective, your comfort zone is a behavioural state where your activities and behaviours fit a routine and pattern that minimises stress and risk.

It provides a state of mental security. When you are inside it, you experience:

  • Low anxiety

  • Predictable outcomes

  • Reduced stress

Our brains are wired for survival, and to the primitive brain, ‘predictable’ equals ‘safe.’ When you contemplate doing something new—whether it is writing a blog, changing careers, or setting a boundary—your brain registers that unknown territory as a literal threat. This is why you experience resistance, procrastination, and self-doubt.

The Hidden Benefits of Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

While staying safe feels good in the short term, prolonged time in the comfort zone leads to stagnation. When you choose to step just beyond those invisible boundaries, you unlock incredible psychological benefits:

Psychological Benefit What It Means For Your Growth
Increased Resilience Facing small anxieties trains your brain to handle future life stressors with greater ease.
Boosted Self-Confidence Every time you try something new, you prove to yourself that you are capable of handling discomfort.
Greater Self-Discovery You cannot learn what you truly like, want, or value if you only ever do what you have always done.

The Power of ‘Micro-Bravery’: Starting Small

When people think about personal growth, they often imagine massive, life-altering leaps. They think they need to quit their job, move across the world, or public speaking in front of thousands.

But growth does not have to be a public spectacle. It does not have to look impressive to anyone else. It can be something that seems incredibly small to the outside world but feels deeply significant to you.

Overcoming People-Pleasing in Daily Choices

If you tend to please others, your comfort zone might involve repeatedly putting yourself last. Think about how often you answer, ‘I don’t mind,’ when someone asks a simple question.

You can challenge yourself to practice micro-bravery the next time someone asks:

  • ‘What shall we have for dinner?’

  • ‘What would you like to watch on TV?’

  • ‘Where should we go for a walk this weekend?’

Choosing what you actually want may feel unfamiliar, uncomfortable, and exposed. You might wonder: What will they think of me? What if they do not like my suggestion? Will I disappoint them?

Even a small decision can feel daunting. But making it is a profound way of taking responsibility for your own needs and recognising that your voice matters too.

3 Simple Steps to Push Your Boundaries This Week

If you want to start expanding your horizons without overwhelming your nervous system, try these three steps:

  1. Identify your micro-stretch: Pick one area this week where you usually play it safe or stay quiet.

  2. Acknowledge the discomfort: When the anxiety arises, remind yourself, ‘This feeling is just my brain trying to keep me safe. It doesn't mean I'm doing something wrong.’

  3. Take the action anyway: Make the choice, say the words, or press the button. Focus on the action, not the outcome.
